Bang! What the hell happened? We’ve somehow got a character based comedy show on TV. A rather good one, written by Paul Whitehouse and David Cummings, featuring Paul Whitehouse.
Called ‘Nurse’ it features a community psychiatric nurse (played by Esther Coles) visiting her clients. One of the few roles not played by Whitehouse. Nurse does however have a very strong supporting cast.
This programme is strong. The writing is strong, the acting is strong – where did it suddenly jump from? A lot of us have given up hope on character based drama never mind comedy. With lesser programnes getting pushed, hyped in every advert break and relentlessly sold on chat shows and in mags – and nearly always being just one big bag of hot air, Nurse had no such publicity and arrived on our screens almost as a shock.
