When contralto Dame Clara Butt [1872-1936] sang Love’s Old Sweet Song for a charity concert at the Savoy Hotel Ballroom in May and June of 1923, her fellow artistes were a distinguished lot indeed. Actor Gerald du Maurier [1873-1934] was there…
…alongside actress Gladys Cooper [1888-1971].
Music Hall comedian Leslie Henson [1891-1957] lent his support…
…while actress Dame May Whitty [1865-1948] put in an appearance.
As if they were not enough, the programme also included the actress Lady Tree [1863-1937] – Helen Maud Holt — who used her married name, Mrs Herbert Beerbohm Tree, on stage (later Lady Tree).
In the video clip below, recorded two years after the concert, Dame Clara Bow sings Love’s Old Sweet Song.
These luncheon concerts were to ‘provide funds for assisting the West Ham Central Mission, Barking Rd., E., to carry on its wonderful work in London’s Dreary Dockland’.
