I knew that area well as a child. There was a small pleasure park nearby, known as ‘Peter Pan’s Pool’, and we would go there for days out. I later went out with a girl who lived near Whitefoot Lane, and we would go for drinks, and to see bands, in the Tiger’s Head pub.
From this 1960s photo, you get the same angle of view as the one in the article. I believe that the site is now a supermarket, or DIY superstore.

Thank you for the Frith link. I love it when a post is about your local manor and you provide little details. In fact, it often influences what I reblog until I think, oh heavens, I mustn’t make this blog all about England.
We used to have what we thought was a long bus journey, ‘all the way’ to that lake. We called the area Bellingham then, though it was close to Catford Police Station. Travelling there from Bermondsey seemed like a real adventure when I was small.
