‘This week I passed a personal-development landmark, because after trying once a decade for 30 years, I finally stayed awake all the way through a Harold Pinter play. I’m so proud. Maybe in another 10 years I’ll mature enough to be able to appreciate that Pinter is not, after all, the Nobel Laureate of farce, and that The Homecoming is just not a play about how simply anything can happen when a mad lady comes to visit. Or as Pinter himself might say … ‘

Deborah Orr in her column in The Independent, 8 March 2008.

That’s a very good quote. I didn’t mind the more ‘accessible’ Pinter work myself. I did see a production of The Birthday Party when I was at school, but I cannot recall who was in it. I also noted that he wrote the excellent screenplay for The Servant. He was often good as an actor too. I didn’t get to see him in Krapp’s Last Tape, but I would have liked to. And his role in The Tailor of Panama (an underrated film) was one I enjoyed.
    Best wishes, Pete. x

My father worked with him in rep when he (Pinter) was an ASM. He (Father) played Wendy Craig’s father in The Servant!

I remember your father in that. It is one of my favourite Losey films.

I have directed both The Homecoming and The Birthday Party. Love the man. His words are magic. Economical. Precise. His detail of character and relationship is unique. He inspired many contemporary playwrights. This post is fun! Thank you.

I’ve just been exploring your blog, Martin. I thought your name was familiar. You’ve probably had a few job letters from me over the decades!

Hi Sarah. Oh, that’s a bit awkward! I have just explored your blog, it is lovely. I read you have trouble with your sight? I do much voluntary work for the rnib, for their talking newspapers, magazines and books. I do hope, whatever your condition is, it will get better.

Thank you. As for the eyes, it’s a long story involving a dodgy cataract operation on left eye a year ago in Crete where I was living for seven years and the scar tissue that had built up. Now on a waiting list for similar (though not dodgy!) op on right eye. That’s the short version!

The Stuff They Won't Include in Any Tourist Guide: The Real England

The Real England is a concise, direct, and not-so-gentle window into the depths of the leftovers of the world’s once greatest empire. It is told from the perspective of one lone (or not so lone) long term visitor. It informs one of the dregs of the country and helps to explain quaint British oddities such as the crack addicted chav.
