Lyn Gardner: Every playwright – even Alan Bennett – needs a champion

Alan Bennett world premiere to be staged at Hytner and Starr’s Bridge Theatre

Peter Hall was once at a party where a woman collared him and said: “What would poor Samuel Beckett’s career have been like if  Waiting for Godot hadn’t landed on your desk?” “My dear lady,” replied Hall, “imagine what mine would have been like if it hadn’t.”

“My dear lady”…is the remark of an insufferable ass.

I think that sponsorship and connections have long been the rule in theatre, and now film too. Take Scorsese and De Niro, then Di Caprio, or the long-lasting collaborations with Mike Leigh, evidenced by Ruth Sheen, and Tim Spall.
(I had to register with The Stage to read the article, by the way. Not a problem)
    Best wishes, Pete. x

Be careful not to use it with me either, Pete. It’s one of the most patronising of terms. Be warned! But the point Hall was making still stands as you’ve acknowledged.

The Stuff They Won't Include in Any Tourist Guide: The Real England

The Real England is a concise, direct, and not-so-gentle window into the depths of the leftovers of the world’s once greatest empire. It is told from the perspective of one lone (or not so lone) long term visitor. It informs one of the dregs of the country and helps to explain quaint British oddities such as the crack addicted chav.
