Save The LEAS PAVILION Folkestone – Fundraising Video

I was very sad to see the parlous state of The Leas Pavilion Theatre in Folkestone as in the video above. Built originally as a tea room in 1902, it is a stunning example of an Art Deco theatre that has seen many a concert and theatre production during the last 114 years. I did a season there in 1983 under the auspices of the late Charles Vance and it was a delightful summer.

The good news is that the campaign has achieved a magnificent result in these early stages for they have received a £10k start-up grant from The Heritage Lottery Fund.  This just the start if the theatre is to be brought back to life for the local community and the tourists who visit this charming seaside town. Please make a donation if you can and help to spread the word via social media.

Thank you.

I was the designer and scenic artist at the Leas Pavilion back in the early seventies. It was my first job in the theatre, and I have such happy memories of a glorious season of around 24 plays in ‘weekly rep’.We had full houses throughout the season! I hope the theatre can be restored and used once again as a theatre on occasions. I have photos of productions from my time in Folkestone if anyone is interested.
My best wishes to the fundraising team, and thank you for trying to restore such a wonderful building.

How interesting! Yes, it is excellent that something is being done. If you want to share your photographs, I would love to post them here. Let me have your email address and I will contact you and then you could send me some.jpgs. That would be wonderful. If you would prefer your email not to be public, I can delete the comment with it as soon as I’ve taken note of it.

I’ve received the emails and love your sets! Thank you. It gives me much to play with. Sadly, I only have black and white from the 1983 season I was in and haven’t yet come across them. Thank you again, Brian.

The Stuff They Won't Include in Any Tourist Guide: The Real England

The Real England is a concise, direct, and not-so-gentle window into the depths of the leftovers of the world’s once greatest empire. It is told from the perspective of one lone (or not so lone) long term visitor. It informs one of the dregs of the country and helps to explain quaint British oddities such as the crack addicted chav.
